Optimal Foraging, Ideal Free Distribtion, Foraging in Risky Environment



A predator should either specialize on the more profitable prey or eat both.
The decision to eat big prey does not depend upon the density of small prey, whilst the decision to eat small prey does depend on the density of big prey.
The decision to specialize depends upon the distribution of the profitable prey and not on the distribution of the less profitable prey. The switch from specialism to generalism should be sudden.
The dominance and subordination relationships which exist between members of a group may have an impact upon a very wide range of areas of their daily lives. Access to food, space, mating opportunities, and survival potential, for example, may in some part depend upon the individual’s standing within its group.
